THE NATURE AND THE FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OkiTracki

Q:            Is OkiTracki a software product?
A:            OkiTracki is a service product implying also licensed usage of a software tool fully assisted by Traceland personnel and without extra cost (license fees are included in service fees).

____top

Q:            Does OkiTracki include GPS based navigation features ?
A:            It does not involve directly navigation features; however users can install on the same mobile device (cell phone, PdA) any of the commercially software + maps solution, knowing they can count on Traceland assistance about.  By choosing specific software pacakages users would be able to benefit from an integration between OkiTracki context data (e.g. daily destination addresses lists) and navigation / trip planning features.

____top

Q:            Does OkiTracki work as a satellite antitefth device?
A:            It cannot function as antitheft device as neither the recommended hardware nor the existing sofware would be suitable for such usage.  However, Traceland can provide support in selecting other vendors solutions for that.

____top

Q:            Can I use RFID technology with OkiTracki ?
A:            It is certainly possible; it would first be necessary to select appropriate “tag” and sensors types (based on process requirements and constraints) an then equip movable devices with chosen sensors to get ready to play.
More advanced usages (e.g.: detecting goods transit through a “gate”) would normally require specific system analisys and development activities for their integration within our application.

Q:            How can I trace shipment-related events occurring within my customers or partners organization ?
A:            OkiTracki is almost unique for openess and potential extension of its usage; as a matter of fact Traceland did focus greatly their attention on these aspects during the design phase.   To address this need (most of the players operate within networks and there could be no real tracking without whole coverage of the logistics chain) Tracelandhas adopted several specific solutions to facilitate cross-company data colection, including:

  • the data model involves the presence of a partner entity underneath the subscriber entity, whose actual content can be maintained by authorized subscriber personnel following the evolution of the business relationships
  • the possibility to let authorized users enter data through easily usable web forms
  • the possibility to track events by faxing or scanning documents carrying special barcoded labels suitable for automatic recognition and thus their immediate (indexed) archiving for subsequent online consultations by authorized users
  • the possibility to let given busines partners send automatically via interfaces or webservices pertaining event details to OkiTracki database
  • the possibility to enable own or partners employees enter their data manually by accessing the system through their cell phone (any mode) and in some cases even be able to read the barcode label with its camera.

Q:            How can I address the need to store PODs and make them available for online inquiry ?
A:            When details about place, date and time of the actual delivery plus name of the recipient would not be sufficient as a proof of delivery, then OkiTracki offers the following solutions to manage formal POD/s:
a) the capability to receive faxed documents carrying a barcoded label that allows the system to adentify the pertaining shipment and thus store the corresponding image file and make it immediately available for on-line inquiries about shipments history (see above).
b) alternatively, the possibility for customers to periodically scan batches of POD/s and other paperwork associated to the shipments, each labelled as above indicated sub a), in order to submit them to the same processing applicable to faxed pages (recognition and archiving for reporting purposes).
c) upon request, the capability to collect recipient’s signature made directly onto the screen of the mobile divice using the special stylus they are equipped with.

Q:            Does OkiTracki support any transportation mode, and even multimodal shipments ?
A:            Yes, OkiTracki works regardless the transportation mode and allows referencing also container codes too.  Moreover, the solution complies with European standards dor multimodal Tracking & Tracing systems (CWA14356).

Q:            Do we really have the need for a dedicated Tracking & Tracing solution ?
A:            Transportation and Logistics Industry has long suffered from massification and impoverishmnet of the its services, accompanied by an excessive stress over price competitivness and, thus, an inevitable drop of attention to service level and quality.
More recently, due to the constantly raising fuel prices and restored attention towards service level and transportation lead times, and thanks to the new opportunities offered by latest technology, the industry operators have started to feel more and more the need to put under tight control the operational processes, seeking for cost containment and higher customer satisfaction.
But Tracking & Tracing is far from being an easy job: it is challenged by mobility of the actions to be controlled, a cross-company (an almost perfect networking scenario) + cross-country + multimodal context, the concrete risks of fast obsoletn of software and hardware equipment adopted, etc...   On the same time, tracking & tracking needs to be highly effective to turn from a “burden” into a inner and outer value generator.  To address these complexities and opportunities it taks a specialized company who, as Traceland does, targets:
  • to develop functinoally and technically leading solutions
  • to pursue a fundamental “standardization” srategy, yet with room to customizations, in order to keep cost of ownership for its customers extremely low
  • to focus on T&T and fleet localization, so that there is no direct and immediate need for customers to change existing processes, aside for what relates to these specific and rather “niche” features (so, for instance, customers would not need to replace any module of the legacy systems when adopting OkiTracki; nor do they have to worry worry about presence of T&T functionality when they happen to evaluate any, since they can count on what OkiTracki permits them to do)
  • to always grant a deep and full connectivity with extrenal system modules belonging to customers themselves or to their partners (from distribution or supply chain).

Q:            Why did Traceland choose to combine fleet satellite localization with Tracking &  Tracking in a single application ?
A:            The two features were addressed in a combined way in order to take advantage of all synergies and functional interrelations involved (sharing of hardware and communication channel, usage of GPS position as an input to tracking transactions, etc.)

____top

Q:            Is OkiTracki of any interest for those who already own a fleet localization solution ?
A:            Under such circumstance users can activate the tracking module only (avoiding to pay for the localization module) and possibly activate GPS anyway to support tracking only - see above.

____top

Q:            What are OkiTracki PLUS with respect to other comparable solutions ?
A:            There are several benefits and competitive advantages associated with usage of choice of OkiTracki. The key ones are enlisted in relevant pages of the present web site.

COST
Q:            How much do I have to invest to use OkiTracki?
A:            There is no need to make investments to use OkiTracki, but for the option to use portable devices to record data and/or localize fleet. Even in such case, however, there is the option to rent the required hardware or to use cell phones instead for tracking activities (way cheaper and normally already on hand).

____top

Q:            Would I need to use SIM cards in my devices ?
A:            To fully benefit from the real-time interactive application functionalities, mobile devices will have to be enabled to GPRS transmission through cell-phone SIM cards that customers may procure from major providers at their choice. Traceland can provide some support in orienting users to make a cost effective choice (with respect to the specific data transmissions requirements deriving from usage of OkiTracki and not considering any further usage customers might want to make of such devices).

____top

Q:            How much would I pay to transmit data from such devices ?
A:            The application has been designed in order to keep the volumes of data transmitted to the lowest possible levels. A normal usage within own country of tracking and localization modules should involve a monthly cost per device within 10€/month in case of properly selected contractual formulas.

Q:            How would my employees react ? Would they accept a new tool ? Would they be adequately skilled for it ?
A:            A recent research conducted by members of Milan Politechnic (Osservatorio ICT) has confirmed that, in spite of diffused expectations, out of approximately sixty cases of ICT projects within Transportation and Logistics Industry, very seldom change management has been an issue.  This proves that, by adopting a cooperative and deeply assisted projectual approach as the one recommended by Traceland, it is definitely possible to manage and control change and a positively good acceptance level.
Moreover, OkiTracki involves important field force automation features that help drivers and other personnell in their daily job and thus soon becomes a favourite tool for them.
